The History of the Charlotte Barbarians The Charlotte Barbarians Rugby Football Club was founded in the Summer of 2007. A few players in the Gaston County/Charlotte area were playing for other clubs and weren't happy with their situations so they got together and decided they wanted to start a club with less politics and more about playing and socializing. They started the Belmont Barbarians in the Summer of 07. By the Fall the Barbarians had their first sponsor and enough to field a team and began playing matches in the Fall of 07. Their first Fall season was a good one with tight matches against the Charlotte Socialites and the Asheville Rugby Club and the Barbarians Won their first Match against Lander College. The following Spring the Barbarians won a few more and started getting a reputation for being a solid team. The highlight of the Spring of 2008 was an invitation from the Charlotte Olde Originals to play a match at the Olde Originals Club against a traveling Canadian College Team the New Brunswick Ironmen. The Barbarians put in a great showing and fell by only 5 points. The Fall of 08 The Barbarians finished their season off with a .500 record and the Barbarians knew a few changes were needed to get over the hump. | In the Spring of 2009 The Barbarians decided to make the move from Belmont to Charlotte, this would help with field scheduling and recruiting. The Barbarians also joined the North Carolina DIII Matrix. The Barbarians finished with a .500 record in their first year of Matrix play. The Summer of 2009 The Barbarians 7's team came into being, instantly posting great results. A 3rd place finish at the Clover 7's and were Plate Champions at Grunk 7's. The Fall of 2009 the Barbarians finally had a winning season going 6-3 overall. These winning ways kept going throughout 2010. In 2010 the Barbarians again came up a little short in the Matrix largely due to a string of unlucky injuries to many players. The Barbos 7's team brought back the winning ways in the Summer of 2010 Finishing 2nd at the Clover 7's and advancing to the playoff rounds at Pitch-A-Tent 7's in GA. The Fall of 2010 was another winning season finishing 6-3, which led to the Barbarians advancing to the playoffs for the DIVIII Mens Matrix in the Spring of 2011. The Barbarians 7's Team followed this up with a great 3rd Place Overall at the Green Vegas 7's in Greenville SC and again making the playoff rounds at Pitch-A-Tent 7's. |
