Captains Match Report from 2-25-12 Match at Davidson College

posted Feb 27, 2012 6:26 PM by Philip Munn

I'll keep this short and sweet.  Barbos dominated from start to finish.  We had a physical mismatch at every position so it wasn't really competitive.  Set pieces were a lot better, but obviously against weaker competition.  Kicking was better.  Rucking was great, especially offensively, but there was a lot of selfish play out of the rucks.  A lot of that can be put on scrumhalf play since we didn't have anyone with experience to play the position.

Biggest area that needs improvement is keeping a coherent attack and defense.  Guys were running off without support, and defensively we bunched up at the breakdown allowing overloads.  Davidson didn't take advantage but they were still mistakes.  Only way to get better is practice, especially scrimmaging.  If we don't have the numbers, even if we scrimmage we can't really work on kiwis and back line defense.

Please, for the love of everything holy come to practice and bring a friend.  We have some tough games coming up and the sloppiness we showed against Davidson won't cut it.

Captains Match Report from 2-18-12 Match vs Table Rock

posted Feb 20, 2012 6:48 PM by Philip Munn

Great game once again boys.  After giving up 10 quick points on some sloppy play, the Barbarians dominated the game to win impressively 55-13.  Set pieces were much improved, especially lineouts.  Still not dominant but getting better.  The backs continued their great play including some new players that filled in and scored tries.

Pros
-Improved set pieces.  Lineouts and scrums were 50/50 whether it was ours or theirs.  Still not great but a decent showing against a team with a lot of size.
-Improved offensive rucking, especially as the game went on.  Once again improved as the game went on showing poise.  Scrumhalf was effective directing traffic around the ruck.
-Tackling was very good across the board.  Defensive rucking was better and we were more aggressive turning the ball over.
-Much better recycling the ball within the pack and having support.
-Continued improvement from less experience pack players and new backs made an instant impact with their speed.

Cons
-Kicking continued to be a problem.  Several kicks did not find touch and became turnovers.  Also several times where players did not kick when deep in their own territory.
-Scrums and lineouts need consistency.
-Receiving kickoffs where misplayed on at least two occasions.  It is a good thing that they had to kickoff so many times, but if we give up possession after scoring it can be a huge momentum swing for the other team.

What to work on
-I'm not a back, but situational kicking needs to improve.  I would suggest kicking before practice not just for distance but for accuracy.  Pick out a target and try to hit it.  Especially wings and fullbacks must be able to kick on the run.
-Both scrums and kickoffs can only be improved with numbers at practice.  We have to have enough guys to practice against each other.  We had twelve pack guys at the game and were still missing a couple, we need you at practice.

As you can see, the pros are starting to outweigh the cons and the things that need work are getting more specific.  We are getting better as a team and individually.  We have a game against Davidson this week, then some off weeks and away games coming up.  Arrange your schedule appropriately.  We can't afford to slack off in practice or travel light.  Let's keep it up and keep kicking ass.

Captains Match Report from 2-11-12 Match at CRFC Socialites

First an overview of the game for those who weren't there. We drew first blood early utilizing the backs speed on the outside to go up 7-0. The Socialites struck back by dominating set pieces and strong team play, maintaining possession through many phases until they punched it in. Socialites led 12-7 at halftime. We scored again early in the second half off of great back play, getting the ball all the way out to the wing and took back the lead 14-12. Midway through the half the Socialites were able to retake the lead off a penalty kick 15-14, but were unable to create much offense because the pack stepped up and was more competitive in both scrums and lineouts and team defense played more aggressively. Red scored the go-ahead try soon after getting out of the sin bin, and Tyrus sealed the deal with a late try for his third of the game. Final score 28-15.

Pros
  • Great support all game long, both from the pack and the backs. Many more balls going to the pack off of rucks because they were in position to make runs. Backs supported each other well, not having runs by themselves and some very slick passing in traffic
  • Improved rucking all game, particularly offensively. We were able to keep possession and attack for several phases.
  • We were able to improve our set pieces during the game. Certainly some of the problems were due to lineup that finally was figured out midway through the second half. In game improvement shows mental toughness, especially when we were down for a good portion of the game.
  • Much improved composure this game.  With only a couple of exceptions, the players left the second guessing of the ref to the idiots on the sideline.

Cons
  • Obviously we start with scrums and lineouts. We solved some of our problems by eventually finding the lineup that worked worked best and that is on the captain (me) to do a better job. But most important is being able to practice with the guys that are going to be at the games, week after week. Please, find a way to make Wednesday practices and come ready to work especially when we are working on set pieces.
  • We still did a poor job turning the other team over in rucks. We worked on it this past week and it was better, but not much.
  • Tackling could also use improvement. Pack needs to be more aggressive off of rucks. Again, we worked on it in practice and in the second half did a better job. Backs especially were either tackling too high (chest level) or too low (going for shoe strings when the man was right in front of you). This is not to say it was everyone or even certain people all the time, but as a team tackling wasn't great and they were able to offload after contact time after time.

I would like to note that we improved offensive rucking, pack support, and backs getting the ball wide from last week. That is great improvement in one week and we would not have won this game without making those improvements. If we can improve in the following area we should be in good position against Table Rock
  • Work on poaching the ball in rucks
  • Work on set pieces
  • Work on tackling aggressively and getting the man to the ground.

Captains Match Report from 2-4-12 Match vs St. Andrews

posted Feb 8, 2012 12:59 PM by Charlotte Barbarians RFC Webmaster

Fellas,

Great job on Saturday - nice way to start off the season with a hard fought win.  Before we completely forget what happened out there, here our my thoughts on what we did well and what we need to improve.  I would suggest that as the powers that be for the club, we make a collective effort to hit the highs and lows after every match to focus the practice for the week and try to improve on our weaknesses.

For the benefit of the guys that weren't there, it was pretty even at the start.  A forward dominated first 20 minutes with a lot of battling up front.  A bit sloppy but not horrible.  We kicked for points when we had the opportunity and had the lead 11-3 at half.  The second half, things opened up a bit and we played much more expansive rugby.  Backs got more involved and we had some long breaks.  We benefited from having a number of subs to stay fresh.  We poured it on (including a try from Tuck at the death) - final score 37-6 or thereabouts.

Pros
-Matched up the physicality of a bigger team.  Our forwards challenged them all game long and made the close in tackles as needed.
-Defense was good as we didn't miss many tackles and didn't allow for big plays.
-No melt downs and we played as a team.  For the most part, no bickering in the ranks (thanks to Kiwi's reminder at half).
-Everyone was involved in breakdowns and provided support.  Great support on the long runs when things opened up in the second half.

Cons
-Forwards did not set pods much if at all.
-Too many turn overs going into rucks.
-Allowing St. Andrews to slow our ball down on offense at the breakdowns.  We need to clean up how we approach our offensive rucks.
-Need to work on set pieces (line outs and scrums).  Difficult to get timing down when guys are playing different positions.  We did OK for the most part but need to be more consistent.
-Defensively at rucks, there were missed opportunities for turnover ball that we need to take advantage of.  We need to know the laws and when you can just pick the darn thing up!
-Too many backs getting caught up in breakdowns on defense.  It didn't hurt us as they didn't get the ball out wide but it will be an issue next week against the Socialites.
-Not enough ball out wide on offense.  We had a huge speed advantage but we only tried to use it a few times.

Practice - what to work on
-Breakdowns (offense) - taking the ball into contact and placing it back; rucks pushing over and providing a platform
-Breakdowns (defense) - poaching balls on the deck; pressing up at the pillars
-line outs and scrums - address game day issues - what went wrong and how to improve generally
-back line play - work on getting ball out to wings with full back coming in

This may be a bit overkill but I'm excited about the season.  The best part was that we had a good number of new guys on the club that contributed.  We'll only survive so long as we continue to grow and bring in numbers.  Can't wait until Saturday!

Last Practice Before the Start of the Season

posted Sep 7, 2011 12:06 AM by caleb jonas

Tonight 8/7 Will be the last chance for the Barbarians to iron out the kinks before heading into their first match against St Andrews this weekend. Everyone who is planning on playing this weekend needs to be there. Practice will be less about drills and conditioning and more about team play and strategy. So Get Off Your Arse and Get To Practice!

2nd Practice Notes from 8/17/2011

posted Aug 21, 2011 11:34 PM by caleb jonas

The second practice of the Barbarians was much improved on the first. Numbers were much better having over 25 and that was with a couple people out due to work, injuries, and sickness. A lot of old faces were back and a few new ones were welcomed to the club. Once again a lot of hands drills were ran. The pack continued it's work on the lineouts, worked a little on scrumming and did some good work focusing on crash balls and setting pods. The backs danced around and worked on running lines and setting plays. The team then joined up for some touch and ran a lot of skeletons focusing on setting phases and situational play. All around a much improved practice compared to the first.  Next practice we get into tackling, so grab your Mouthguards & Gumshields!

Fall 1st Practice Notes from 8/10/2011

The fall 15s season has arrived and practice has begun. The numbers were a little low for the first practice of the fall having only 15 there. There were a few regulars out for various reasons so numbers should be better at the next practice. First practice focused mainly on handling. The pack worked on the game plan for our new lineouts and the backs pranced around and worked on set plays and running their lines. This practice definitely showed we have a lot of work to do to be ready for our first match.
